Vermont Microsystems
Windows 3.0 Driver
Installation Notes
VERSION
This diskette contains driver version 0.9. Please make note of this
when consulting with Technical Support.
PROCEDURE
1. If you have not already done so, install the X/Series graphics
processor in you system as per the X/Series Installation Guide.
Be sure to run INSTALLV to ensure that the DOS driver and firmware
for the X/Series is properly loaded.
2. Modify the Vermont Microsystems specific line in your config.sys
that INSTALLV placed there. The line should currently read:
device = <pathname>\vmdos.sys /d=1000
where <pathname> denotes the path to the directory you chose to
place all the Vermont Microsystem specific files. The default is
C:\VERMONT. The line must be modified by appending a '/c=40'.
The line in config.sys should now read:
device = <pathname>\vmdos.sys /d=1000 /c=40
where <pathname> denotes the path to the directory you chose to
place all the Vermont Microsystem specific files.
3. Reboot you system so the changes made to config.sys can take place.
4. If you have previously installed an earlier version of the
X/Series Windows driver, SETUP will not copy the new driver files
over. This is a bug in the Microsoft SETUP. To insure proper
operation delete the file VMI.DRV from the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory.
5. Run Windows SETUP either from the Windows 3.0 distribution
diskettes or the WINDOWS directory if you have previously
installed WINDOWS 3.0.
6. Under the 'SYSTEM INFORMATION' Menu, select the DISPLAY option.
7. In response to the 'SELECT DISPLAY from the following list' prompt,
select 'Other'. This should ask you for the diskette supplied by
Vermont Microsystems containing the Windows 3.0 driver.
8. The Windows 3.0 driver files are contained in a subdirectory on
the disk called \WIN3. When prompted as to where to find the disk
and requested files, make the response box look like
(assuming diskette in A: drive):
A:\WIN3
9. In response to the 'SELECT DISPLAY from the following list' prompt
select:
Vermont Microsystems X/Series
10. Follow the rest of the Windows SETUP procedure normally.
11. An additional modification to the SYSTEM.INI should be made when
the Windows SETUP program has successfully completed. The line
that must be added is:
emmexclude=D000-D3FF
This line should be added immediately following the line containing:
[386Enh]
If this line does not exist create it immediately following the line:
system.drv=MS-DOS or PC-DOS System
The top of the SYSTEM.INI should look like:
[boot]
286grabber=vgacolor.gr2
386grabber=vga.gr3
fixedfon.fon=8514fix.fon
oemfonts.fon=8514oem.fon
fonts.fon=8514sys.fon
display.drv=vmi.drv
mouse.drv=mouse.drv
shell=progman.exe
network.drv=
language.dll=
comm.drv=comm.drv
sound.drv=sound.drv
keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv
system.drv=system.drv
[keyboard]
subtype=
type=4
oemansi.bin=
keyboard.dll=
[boot.description]
display.drv=Vermont Microsystem X/Series
mouse.drv=Microsoft, or IBM PS/2
network.drv=
language.dll=English (American)
keyboard.typ=Enhanced 101 or 102 key US and Non US keyboards
system.drv=MS-DOS or PC-DOS System
[386Enh]
emmexclude=D000-D3FF
12. The X/Series is now fully installed in the Windows 3.0
environment.
KNOWN PROBLEMS
1. This version of the X/Series Windows 3.0 driver uses the memory
range D000 - D3FF. This may cause conflicts with other devices.
2. Older, incompatible version of the Novell Network have cause
intermitant hangs. If the Windows Setup procedure did not like
your network configuration and you are running in a network
environment you may run into problems.
3. Older versions of QEMM.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS at setup time can
cause problems while running SETUP. Save your current CONFIG.SYS,
delete the QEMM.SYS line from you CONFIG.SYS and rerun SETUP.
NOTES
1. The Windows 3.0 default color scheme results in a dithered
Active Window Title Bar for 4-bit X/Series boards. This results
in a small performance degradation. The color scheme can be
modified via the Control Panel.
IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS...
Common errors for X/Series Windows installation are:
1. CONFIG.SYS line not modified as per step 2 in the Installation
Procedure above.
2. EMMEXCLUDE not in the SYSTEM.INI file as per step 11 in the
Installation Procedure above. The symptom displayed for this
problem is missing groups of lines on the display in 386
Enhanced mode.
3. Older versions of QEMM.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS at setup time can
cause problems while running SETUP. Save your current CONFIG.SYS,
delete the QEMM.SYS line from you CONFIG.SYS and rerun SETUP.
4. Most Windows problems are Windows environment problems. We
strongly recommend using the Microsoft supplied MOUSE.SYS,
HIMEM.SYS and SMARTDRV.SYS. These drivers control the mouse,
manage extended memory and cache disk requests respectively.
Using other drivers to perform the same functions can cause
problems.
5. Many Windows 2.0 applications will run under Windows 3.0. In
the Windows 3.0 environment they generate an error message but
the option exists to ignore the error message. While the
application may appear to run correctly corruption of the
environment may be taking place. Take these error messages
seriously. Update the application or use sparingly.
6. Conflicts with other devices at memory locations D000 - D3FF.
This driver will only operate at D000-D3FF.
